| Hi John,
A friend from the early 70's in Aspen. I was Patti Rayburn when we met at the summer chair lift at Highlands, Casey being close to 3 and you playing 3 Blind Mice for her at the bottom of the lift you ran, practicing your fiddle.
My sister recently died and "Annie's Song" played at her memorial, as she and her husband were such huge fans of John Denver, so I have been playing that song and some of his tunes since then and have thought of you, wondering how your life has evolved, thinking of you w/fond memories.
I have been a massage therapist for 22 years here in Ashland,OR and decided to return to school to get my Masters in Mental Health Counseling degree in the fall of 2011, so will graduate in June 2013--I had no idea what I was getting into but now just have to get through it and get out and pay off all my student loans--just 2 more quarters!
I just wanted to say hello and to thank you for entertaining Casey (now almost 43 with a 3 year old precious daughter, Parker) while I was typing a doctorate thesis andsimultaneously selling lift tickets that summer out of that little booth.. multitasking seemed so easy in those times!
Wishing you the best,
Kate (Patti)

| Hi John, Happy Thanksgiving 2012! I am doing all sorts of playing around on the computer today, as Mark and his daughter Caity are doing the cooking. Mark is another former Navy guy- he made it all the way through BUD/S, only to have his knee go out the day before graduation. So neat for me to see what a great life you are living, bringing enjoyment to so many people. Those of us lucky enough to be artistic our whole lives are indeed blessed. |

| What a treat to see you sing and especially play the Fiddle, Banjo, and Mandolin to the tunes of John Denver. It took the concert with Jim Curry in Big Bear to a new level, from great to grand. I very much enjoyed it as did my friends. It was great to talk with you after the concert also. Daphne |

| Hi John ~ You probably don't remember me. I used to work at Open Gate Assisted Living in Glenwood Springs. You and some of your buds came to play for our residents a few times while I was there. I was usually pretty busy while you guys were playing, but you can be sure I was listening and enjoying your tunes! I just wanted to let you know how impressed I was that you seemed to be such a nice guy. I don't miss Glenwood so much, but I definitely miss Carbondale. Hope to move back to that area again at some point. I have a friend, Jeff Pine, who does tributes to John Denver. You may or may not know him. (Also a really nice guy.) He has a tribute to John coming up in October in Aspen, as a matter of fact. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your music and knowing that you're a good guy. Thanks for the music and God bless. ~ Maryl =) |

| My girls and I loved the Slugger O'Toole concert in Folsom tonight. Thank you for talking to us after the show and especially for talking to my ten-year-old about her violin playing.
I didn't have time to mention to you that when we lived in WA state my children attended Dick Scobee Elementary, named after the commander of the Challenger Space Shuttle. John Denver was kind enough to write a song for the students in honor of commander Scobee. Funny how we are all connected. :)
I hope to see some of your amazing fiddle and banjo playing at the Slugger O'Toole Christmas Concert. Till then, safe travels. Teresa |

| Hello, John!
My 18 year old son was just humming/singing a song you may remember -- a spiritual called "Jesus, Take Me Home". I was taken aback, since the only place he could possibly have heard it was from my singing it. And the only place I ever heard it was on the Liberty album I bought in about 1974 or 5, when the band was opening for Steve Martin.
I saw you guys at the Troubadour in Los Angeles and was (along with my friends) blown away by the musicianship, the arrangements and the quality of your voices. I learned several of the songs off that album and have sung them to my wife and kids (and myself) many times since.
I just wanted to reach out and let you know that your influence apparently transcended a generation. And if you have any idea where I can get Liberty songs online, well that would be even better!
All the best,
Josh

What a GREAT way to start my vacation. My good friends Harold and Cathy Simpson bought the ticket for me and I was so exhausted after the cross country trip that I almost didn't go, but BOY am I glad I did. Harold took a photo of you, me and his wife Cathy. I will tell him to send it to you. Again, it was such a pleasure to meet you and hear you sing some of your signature songs and I look forward to having a chance to see you again. |

| Hi John and Stephanie,
I was listening to the National Radio programme here in Auckland, New Zealand and heard an American reporter (?Jules or Giles) talking about support from all around the world for our earthquake disaster reflief. When I heard him say that a kiwi nurse living in Aspen Colorado was raising funds I was so exited as I was sure he would be talking about Stephanie. He went on to say that Stephanie (Robertson) had been to church and asked her friends for help with donations.
As a North Islander we follow the news on TV just like you. It seems so surreal - happening in my own country but hard to believe when it doesn't seem to affect our day to day living up here in Auckland. Takes a while to sink in what really is happening. The help from other countries, particularly the rescue teams has been outstanding. We are an incredibly resourceful country but we can't do this on our own.
Now that we've moved from the "rescue" to the "recovery of the dead" state and the funeral services have started it really starts to feel real. My family, friends and colleagues are all safe but in a small country with only about half a million people living in the affected area, all of us will know someone who is affected.
In our country, to have your child die in an earthquake at only a few months old, or indeed anyone dying here from an earthquake, is beyond comprehension. To have a family member die while they are holidaying or studying in our beautiful country must be just as devasting for all our overseas friends.
The destruction is horrible but the bricks and mortar can be replaced. At the moment the solidarity and national spirit is strong. Times like this brings "kiwis" together all around the world. Lots of people need our help.
Aroha (Love) to you both.

| My uncle Kenny, who is only a couple of years older than me, went to a John Denver concert somewhere in the 1973/1974 timeframe and came home with a Liberty album. I remember two songs - Java Jive and Always Be With Him. I find myself humming those all the time! Is there any way to get these great songs on a CD or download them?

| Thanks again John for the autographs and pictures from you and your new group on their CD! My son and I were leaving Aspen from our own John Denver memorial time and you all were playing in the airport on Monday September 27th. Your music when you were playing with John Denver inspired me to take up singing and guitar playing and now my son also plays and sings. I wish I could have stayed longer and shared with you just how much your's and JD's music have impacted my life and seen me through some lonely nights. I wish I could be there this October for all of the performances, but meeting you made it our visit a VERY special time! Please keep us informed of any new CD's you record.

| Was surprised when I entered www.johnsommers.com and hit a site. Then to see bluegrass and banjo and such. And finally when I saw frequent mention of Baltimore, I have to ask if you could be kin. My Grandfather's Charles father (maybe Charles too) came from Baltimore area up through the Cumberland Gap area to Williamsport in central Pennsylvania, probably in the early 1900s. Family (Tommy Hafner for one) has talked about the family musicians down Baltimore way and how they play banjo, toot on the jug and even play the washboard. Just curious. |

I was fortunate enough to get to hear the Bluegrass Salad Boys a lot in the mid seventies as I was a waitress at Don Giovanni's, where they played every Sunday night. If I wasn't waiting tables, they let me sit in with them on the spoons! Those were some really fun times. What a great music scene to get to witness. | Hello John,
I´m not sure if I should place this comment here in your guestbook. But you should know that at last in the late 1970th John Denver animated me to learn Acoustic-Guitar, and you are to be "blamed" that I get the strong wish to learn the 5-String-Banjo-Playing, cause I always regard & respect you as a real great musician.
So I decide to write this little piece of message here into this page :)
With your great experience in Country-Folk-Western-Music I have the hope that perhaps you can give me a small advice how to find somebody trustable (even preferably in Germany?) who could be interested in producing and marketing my own written songs. I recorded them in my little homestudio and already put them into youtube as uncommercial videofiles (the quality could be better, but the compression of the files unfortunately made it worser).
Here are Links to find some of these songs:
1. Green Mountain: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vLUSEonkBg;
2. Dancing with the Ingalls: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjqOrXy0Dtk
3. Ghost Town Creek: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2juUjHLXpz0
4. I´ve believed in life: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcwiStWWL-U
5. James Younger Gang: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDCQ2_jZ1PQ
6. Outlaws: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUaPEFun8Cw
7. Riding Westwards: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M2YfIOtf90
I really hope it´s ok and you are not angry about my booking. But if you are please delete this completely notice here again.
I wish to you that you still have a healthy and long life and that you could go on making wonderful music for all of us :)
With regards

| Hi John,
I was at the John Denver Tribute concert at Red Rocks on Saturday night with my sons. It was their first Red Rocks experience and it was incredible. I've never seen Red Rocks so packed! My first Red Rocks concert was 35 years ago, 1974, John Denver. I was two and I remember sitting near the top of the ampitheater, in the dark, watching the band on stage way down below and the lights of Denver come on beyond the stage. I grew up with this music and it means so much to me. Thank you. I sure hope you all play Red Rocks again next summer because I've told everyone how wonderful the concert was and how they need to see it next year!
Take care,

| Hi John, I recently googled Jan- We've been out of touch for 30 years or so- will soon talk on the phone. BOY OH BOY- So many great memories of the Liberty days for me. I'm out here living among the real cowboys and ranchers and getting to understand them alot better- it is a very gratifying experience, after doing my bead and leatherwork all these years, it being Western in style-to now learn the real nitty gritty of their lives. I find that they have a wonderful sweetness inside. I found you by following links- Jan, J.D., Bobby Mason- to you. Great to see your pictures and to see that you are doing so well. I will be listening to you at the Maybell Library soon- I've always thought that you were the best fiddle player I ever heard. Fond memories, Skip |

| Hi John, We hope you are all well. We are enjoying our CD "Heart of the Rockies" and Chad has most of it memorized. He really likes "Mind Your Own Business". If all things work out, Chad will be attending a week of camp at "Challenge Aspen". Mack and Rachel volunteered at the music and arts week last year and feel it would be a great experience for Chad. We will be in your area from July 18th until at least the 26th. We are hoping there will be opportunities to hear you all sing as well as visit. This is a huge adventure for us! Please keep us posted about your schedule. Greet Stephanie, Twerp, Cash, Randy and anyone else!! Affectionately, Vickie and Chad |

(I've loved "...country boy" all of my life but never knew who wrote it!! The addition of your guest performers made it even more memorable--the harmonica virtuosity was awesome. | Hello John,
first I like to excuse my worse "School-English", but I hope, you will understand ;)
In the end of the 70th (when I was a young boy of 17) I became a great John Denver-Fan like so many other people at that time. I played Guitar and we all love to sing his songs at every nice romantic party. But one day I get this album called "Back home again"... I loved all the songs on it, they all were so great ones! But one song became my favourite till today. And this song is "Matthew". I loved the song because of the music in it... the music set by the 5-string-banjo. And then I wanted to know, which guy made this fabulous settings and tunes with the banjo - and wrote with it song-history in small 3:41 minutes. Today I know, who it was (thank God, there´s the internet ;)) - and I tell you something, John: You are the reason for that I learned to play 5-String-Banjo...which I love today! And all cause of that great song - ABSOLUTELY GREAT SONG!:)
And at last I just have one little question or request. Is it possible to get the real notation of what you virtously played on banjo in Matthew? If not, don´t bother - it´s all ok ;)
So thank you one more time for your wonderful tune-ideas that made this song to what he really is: perfect!
Best wishes from Germany,

| Hi John,
Don't know whether you will have time in your busy schedule. Been a John Denver fan since I can't remember. One of my favourites albums is " An Evening with John Denver". Playing with the man must have been quite an experience. As I understand the show was recorded by ABC Television and won an Emmy Award in 1975. I know of a lot of people that would "die" for a copy of the show. Was it ever release to the public? if not, I can guarantee that lots of John Denver fans worlwide would readily buy it if it was ever released on DVD. Perhaps through your connections you could find out and make lots of people happy. I know John would want this, specially to mark the 10th anniversary of his departure. I guess I would rather be in Colorado watching you and the others remembering John this October.
I am originally from Spain, I saw some pictures of members of John Denver Fan Club in Spain meeting with you in Aspen. I have just joined the "Friends of John Denver Club" in the UK. I am hoping to sing and play some of John's songs on a "John Denver Day" in December. I will play Thank God I'm a Country Boy" Fancy joining in on the fiddle?
Anyway take good care of yourself and God Bless

| Hi John!
Found you on a GOOGLE several months ago and it inspired me to dig out my old slides from the winter of '70-71. Took me a while to find and process them and I will leave LINKS to said photos at the end. I don't remember all of the names; but there was 'Froggy', Jimmy, Neal and the gang at Aspen Highlands. That was a pretty special and exciting season; what with John Denver showing up and The Nitty, Gritty Dirt Band and all.
My story is similar to yours, except I didn't have the talent to make it in the mountains. Naval Aviator, just off Active Duty, looking for an airline job in a Nixon 'wage & price control' world. My original job with UAL in DEN was withdrawn and the 450 guys furloughed didn't get hired back until '78.
I gravitated to San Diego when the snow melted in '71 and joined the Reserves, from which I retired 22 years later. Interviewed with PSA, AirCal, Continental & Western between '72 & '75 . .and was lucky enough to have a 'contact' in my Reserve squadron who knew the President of Federal Express. I got my Falcon Type Rating in the summer of '75, went back to San Diego and took a job as a part time Courier. That gave the 'in' needed and I was hired as the 200th pilot at what became FedEx.
I remember riding a chair up with you on one of the last ski runs before the snow melted and you told me you had taken a summer job at the top of the ski lift so you could practice picking the banjo. That obviously worked out for you .
Maybe you remember some of these folks?: http://www.farm-boy-navy-pilot-airline-captain.com/aspenbargang.jpg, http://www.farm-boy-navy-pilot-airline-captain.com/drewnaspenbabes.jpg, http://www.farm-boy-navy-pilot-airline-captain.com/jimmynneil.jpg, http://www.farm-boy-navy-pilot-airline-captain.com/johnsommers71.jpg, http://www.farm-boy-navy-pilot-airline-captain.com/highlandsgang.jpg, http://www.farm-boy-navy-pilot-airline-captain.com/highlandsgang2.jpg, http://www.farm-boy-navy-pilot-airline-captain.com/highlandsgang3.jpg, http://www.farm-boy-navy-pilot-airline-captain.com/highlandsgang4.jpg |
